Lesson 3: How to enjoy hobbies virtually
How to enjoy hobbies virtually
You may not be able to go to your favorite places or attend events as often as you’d like to, but you can visit many of them virtually at any time, wherever you are.
No matter what your hobbies are, you can now find experiences online and within the virtual realm. Check out the websites and social media profiles of local libraries, museums, art galleries, and other recreational places to see if they offer their experiences in a digital or virtual format.
By taking advantage of digital or virtual experiences on a smartphone or computer, older adults can continue to live life to the fullest — whether you want to join a vintage car forum online, a virtual book club, or a yoga class.
Step 1
Download apps for Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms from the applications store on your smart device, and then follow your favorite locations and organizations on each app.
Step 2
Sign up for any social media newsletters, daily bulletins, and regular email correspondences from places like your local recreation center, museum, music venue, winery, or favorite cooking store to ensure you’re in the loop on digital offerings and virtual experiences.
Step 3
Invite family and friends to attend each virtual experience and build digital groups that can meet weekly to discuss, learn, and share each experience. This is also great to do with a partner as it builds camaraderie.
Step 4
If you are able, volunteer virtually to stay involved within the community and show added appreciation for the virtual events they offer.
Step 5
Tag yourself “attending” digital events, museum tours, and online classes to share the experience with all friends and family!
