Mississippi Program Overview
Looking for property tax relief in Mississippi? There are two main ways to apply for property tax relief:
- Regular Homestead Exemption
- Homestead Exemption for persons 65 and older or 100% disabled

Regular Homestead Exemption
A regular homestead exemption allows for a graduated tax credit up to $300 on a home, limited to the first $7,500 of assessed value.
Eligibility
- Applicant must own the property and reside on the property on January 1 of the year the application is made.
- Property must be the primary residence of the applicant(s).
- Applicant, applicant’s spouse, and any joint owners must be bona fide residents of the state.
- Applicant(s) must be in compliance with the Mississippi income tax requirements.
- All vehicles owned by or in the possession of the applicant(s) must have Mississippi license plates.
- Applicant(s) can file for homestead exemption on only one residence in the state.
Application Deadline
The application for exemption must be filed with the individual county between January 1 and April 1.
Required Documentation
- A copy of your recorded Warranty Deed.
- Your Mississippi car and/or truck tag numbers.
- Social Security Numbers for you and your spouse if you are married.
- Birth dates for you, your spouse, or all parties applying for homestead.
- Your closing or settlement statement.
- Purchase price of home.
- Purchase price of land, if you purchased it separately from the home.
- If you built your home yourself, we need to know the cost to build it.
- If you built your home yourself, we need to know the cost to build it.
Homestead Exemption for persons 65 and older or 100% disabled
When an individual who is eligible for homestead exemption benefits becomes 65 years of age or 100% disabled, the individual is eligible to apply for an additional homestead exemption benefit. Eligible persons are exempt from all ad valorem taxes up to $7,500.00 of assessed value.
Eligibility
- Must be at least 65 years old or totally disabled.
- Must own and occupy the qualifying property as a primary residence.

Required Documentation
The following documents are typically required to apply for age or disability-related homestead exemptions in Mississippi. Please consult your local assessor to see if additional documentation is accepted in your area.
- If you are 65 years of age or older, you need to bring proof of age, such as a driver’s license or birth certificate.
- If you are 100% disabled, you must provide proof, such as a Social Security Award Letter or a letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs proving service-connected, total disability of an honorably discharged veteran.
