Since 1968, Tax-Aide has provided free tax assistance to more than 80 million taxpayers. Our tax counselors are fully IRS-certified, so you can count on them to provide you with excellent service and accurate returns. Depending on the location, interpreters may be available, too. AARP membership is not required.

How does it work?
Once Tax-Aide is open for the tax season, you can get free help with your taxes from an IRS-certified tax counselor at a local Tax-Aide service site. You can book an appointment at some sites, while others may offer walk-in appointments. Most Tax-Aide sites are located at community centers, libraries, schools, or other convenient locations in cities and towns across the country.
You can also receive coaching assistance from an IRS-certified volunteer to help you complete your taxes.
When are tax preparation services available?
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide generally runs from February to April 15.
We recommend that you sign up to receive a notification when Tax-Aide prep service opens.
What do I need to bring to get started?
Take some time now to get prepared for your Tax-Aide service.
In general, you’ll need to:
- Provide documentation for your return, such as a government-issued photo ID, a copy of your 2023 tax return, and documents related to your income, investments, healthcare expenses, and property taxes, if applicable. Learn what documents to bring.
When do I get my tax refund?
The sooner you file your tax return, the sooner you can expect to receive your refund (if applicable). E-filing and requesting a direct deposit refund to your bank account is the fastest.
What types of returns can Tax-Aide help with?
The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide team can help with many, but not all, tax returns (small business with employees, rental income, or alternative minimum tax.
You don’t have to be an AARP member to receive tax prep help — we offer free tax return preparation to anyone who needs it but focus primarily on those who are over 50 and living on a limited income.
