How to Check Your EBT Balance
A simple guide to help older adults check their EBT card balance and keep track of their SNAP benefits with confidence.

If you use an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card to receive food assistance through SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program aka “food stamps”), it’s important to know how to check your balance. Staying on top of your EBT card balance helps you manage your food budget better, so you can buy the foods you need without surprises at the store. Knowing your balance can also protect you from mistakes or problems, such as lost benefits or unauthorized charges. Here are some easy ways to check your EBT card balance.
1. Check Your Balance Online
Many states offer online portals where you can check your EBT balance — with ConnectEBT being used by many states. To use the website:
- Visit the ConnectEBT website.
- Select your state program.
- Enter your login credentials.
- Once logged in, you can view your current balance and transaction history.
To find out if your state uses an EBT portal, you can search online for “EBT” followed by your state’s name.
2. Use a Mobile App
You can also check your EBT balance with a mobile app. The Propel app is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. After downloading the app, you can link your EBT card to view your balance, transaction history, find nearby stores that accept EBT, and even be notified when new benefits are deposited.
3. Call the Customer Service Number
You can call the customer service number on the back of your EBT card to check your balance. This service is available 24/7 and is free of charge. Be sure to have your 16-digit card number and 4-digit PIN ready when you call.
4. Check Your Last Store Receipt
You can use receipts to track your balance without needing an app or a website. Every time you use your EBT card at a store, your receipt will show your remaining balance. Look for the abbreviations “EBT Food Bal” or “EBT Cash Bal” near the bottom of the receipt.
5. Use an ATM
You can check your EBT balance at ATMs that accept EBT cards. Insert your card, enter your 4-digit PIN, and select the “Balance Inquiry” option. Some ATMs may charge a fee, so look for machines that are part of the Allpoint network to avoid extra charges.
