7 Benefit Programs That Could Save You Money
Discover help paying for household expenses
These days, rising costs are eating up more of everyone’s budget. If you’re struggling to pay for household expenses like rent, utilities, doctors appointments, groceries, or the internet, these government programs may help. Many people who qualify for one program are eligible for others.
For more than 60 years, AARP Foundation has been helping people secure these kinds of essentials. That’s why we’re highlighting seven programs that may help you save money, plus make it easier to discover available programs in your area.
Even if you’re unsure if you meet the income levels required, we urge you to learn more about the programs we’ve rounded up here. You just may find a way to gain some wiggle room in your budget when you need it most.
Affordable Senior Housing
With housing costs on the rise, now may be the time to see if you’re eligible for low-cost or subsidized apartments near you. You may also qualify for rent relief programs in your area that can add some breathing room to your household budget.
Help Paying for Groceries
SNAP — sometimes known as food stamps — can help you buy more food each month. (It’s not just for families with children.) On average, SNAP households with at least one adult age 50 or older received $144 per month in 2018. You’ll get a card that looks and works like a debit or credit card but is loaded with your benefits. You can use it at more than 250,000 grocery stores and farmers markets across the country.
Health Coverage
One in five Americans get their care through Medicaid — the nation’s health insurance program for people with a low income. You’ll usually pay nothing for covered medical expenses and doctors will treat you the same as everyone else.
Financial Assistance
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides cash for food, clothing, and shelter for blind people, and people living on a low income or with other disabilities. People 65 and older without disabilities who meet the financial qualifications may receive SSI payments.
Internet or Phone Service
Unlike your other utility bills, which typically go up or down depending on how much electricity or water you use, your internet, phone, or cable providers charge you a flat rate each month. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to save on these essential household expenses. Did you know there are programs available that may help you save on your internet, phone, and TV expenses?
Energy Bill Assistance
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) offers help with paying your home energy bills. In addition, if you’re without — or in danger of being without — heating or cooling, you can contact them for emergency assistance.
Emergency Benefit Services
If you find yourself in a real bind and need immediate assistance, contact your state’s human services or social services agency for help. They can either provide financial assistance or refer you to local community organizations that can.
