Since 1968, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide has provided free tax assistance to more than 75 million taxpayers. Our tax counselors are fully IRS-certified, so you can count on them to provide you with excellent service and accurate returns. We’d love to work with you!
Tax-Aide will be available nationwide starting in early February through April 15. Be the first to know by signing up for updates. (You’ll also be prompted to set up an AARP Foundation Tax-Aide account.)
We’ll notify you when Tax-Aide opens its doors so you can sign up for free help filing your return. AARP membership is not required, and interpreters may be available.

How does it work?
Once Tax-Aide is open for the tax season, you will make an appointment to work with an IRS-certified tax counselor at a location near you. Most Tax-Aide sites are located at community centers, libraries, schools, or other convenient locations in cities and towns across the country.
Depending on the Tax-Aide location, there also may be low-contact or contactless tax prep options available.
You can also receive coaching assistance from an IRS-certified volunteer to help you complete your taxes.
When are tax preparation services available?
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide generally runs from February 1 to April 15. We recommend that you sign up to receive a notification when it’s time to book your free appointment.
What do I need to bring to get started?
Take some time now to get prepared for your Tax-Aide appointment.
In general, you’ll need to provide documentation for your return such as a government-issued photo ID, a copy of your 2023 tax return, and documents related to your income, investments, healthcare expenses, and property taxes, if applicable. Learn more here.
What types of returns can Tax-Aide help with?
The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide team can help with most, but not all, tax returns. If you have an extremely complicated return, such as one that involves a small business with employees, rental income, or alternative minimum tax (AMT), Tax-Aide may not be able to help.
You don’t have to be an AARP member to receive tax prep help — we offer free tax return preparation to anyone who needs it, but focus primarily on those who are over 50 and living on a limited income.
